Harbin Institute of Petroleum (HIP) is a full-time undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. In 2024, it was designated as a candidate institution for the establishment of a master’s degree program. Founded in 2003, HIP has consistently ranked first nationwide among geological, mining, and petroleum institutions in the Chinese Alumni Association rankings for several years. It has been recognized with prestigious titles such as “China’s Benchmark University” by China National Radio (CNR) News, “Outstanding Institution of Higher Education in China,” “Most Influential University in China,” and “National Champion of the FLTRP Teaching Star Competition.”
Guided by the motto “Extensive Learning and Pragmatism, Aspiration and Innovation,” HIP is committed to a regional, application-oriented educational approach. It has developed a multidisciplinary academic structure centered on engineering, integrating economics, management, literature, arts, and education. The campus spans 890,600 square meters, with an enrollment of over 12,000 full-time students across 35 undergraduate programs. HIP offers 35 undergraduate programs, with engineering disciplines accounting for 68.57% of the total. The Mechanical and Electronic Engineering program is a provincial key development discipline, while the Petroleum Engineering and Internet of Things Engineering programs have been recognized as provincial first-class undergraduate programs. Centered on the collaborative framework of “Intelligent Empowerment, Digital Transformation, and Petroleum Foundation,” HIP has established a distinctive, three-dimensional application-oriented talent training system.
Intelligent Empowerment: Focusing on core technologies in intelligent equipment development and digital transformation, HIP collaborates with leading enterprises such as Harbin Electric Corporation and Heilongjiang Institute of Mechanical Science to build a full-chain system encompassing “intelligent equipment R&D, standard formulation, and technology commercialization.” In the past three years, researchers from the School of Intelligent Engineering have won two First-Class and one Second-Class Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, undertaken 16 national and provincial research projects, received the National Power Industry Innovation Achievement First Prize, and secured 22 patents. The school has also established a key laboratory for ""Composite Material Processing and Application Technology,"" aiming to foster new productivity breakthroughs.
Digital Transformation: Partnering with leading tech enterprises such as Huawei and QiAnXin, HIP focuses on artificial intelligence and big data technologies to develop a new talent engine for the digital economy. Over the past three years, it has earned a Provincial Teaching Achievement First Prize, established four provincial first-class courses, developed three ideological and political case studies, and obtained 40 patents and software copyrights. HIP has also collaborated with Fuda Technology, Qihoo 360, and QiAnXin to establish a cybersecurity offense-defense training platform, implementing a “case-based teaching + applied research” dual-driven model that has produced over 1,000 interdisciplinary technical experts for the “Digital Heilongjiang” initiative.
Petroleum Foundation: Dedicated to energy industry upgrades and digital transformation, HIP works closely with industry giants such as China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) to build a comprehensive system encompassing “oil and gas exploration and development, intelligent production, and green energy transition.” In the past three years, HIP has established provincial first-class undergraduate programs, developed three first-class courses, designed two ideological and political case studies, undertaken 22 national and provincial education and research projects, and secured 19 patents, positioning itself as a national leader in oil and gas engineering innovation.
HIP has pioneered the “Industry Academy+” education model, integrating industry needs with student career pathways. HIP has established six specialized industry academies: Energy Informatization Industry Academy: Merging energy and information technology for the digital transformation of traditional energy industries. QiAnXin Industry Academy & Kylin Software Education Center: Specializing in cybersecurity and domestic software ecosystems. Low-Altitude Economy Industry Academy: Leading research in drone applications and low-altitude logistics. Cross-Border Digital Trade Industry Academy: Supporting the digital trade needs of the Belt and Road Initiative. Creative Design Industry Academy: Leveraging digital media technology for the cultural and creative industries.
Additionally, HIP has founded the Huawei Intelligent Connected Vehicle Academy in partnership with Kylin and Huawei, focusing on cutting-edge vehicle technology.
The four research Centers—Intelligent Technology, Information Technology, Green Chemical Technology, and Low-Altitude Economy—align with HIP’s master’s degree development goals.
Through 12 jointly established laboratories and 36 corporate-sponsored classes, HIP has created an industry-integrated education model, ensuring a seamless transition from academic training to career placement, with key program employment rates exceeding 95% for a decade.
Seizing the strategic opportunity of Heilongjiang Province’s development as China’s new frontier for collaborating with North, HIP has deeply integrated internationalization into its academic programs and talent development strategies. As a leading university in China-Russia educational cooperation, HIP has established a robust exchange mechanism with 35 prestigious foreign universities, including Saint Petersburg State University and Ural Federal University.
